First, with an online notarization, the signer must appear before the Notary via webcam. The Notary must be able to identify the signer through government-issued ID, and the signer must be physically present during the entire notarization process. Second, all original documents must be uploaded and reviewed by the Notary prior to the start of the notarization. And finally, online notarizations require an electronic signature (eSignature) which is different from a regular handwritten signature.

This is as of 8/1/2022. When we hear of a new state changing its laws to include RON signings, we will update this list. If you hear differently, double check with your Secretary of State, and if your state has adopted RON signings, please let us know.
As of now, there are only four states that have reciprocal agreements for RON signings. These states are Florida, North Carolina, Texas, and Virginia. While this may seem like a small number, it is important to remember that RON is still a relatively new technology. It is very possible that more states will develop reciprocal agreements in the future.

A remote online notary is a notary who can perform their duties remotely, using audio-visual technology. This means that they can interact with the signer of a document in real time, without being in the same physical location. The notary must be commissioned by their state to perform remote online notaries and have a platform that stores and records their digital journal, their digital stamp and keeps video records of all of the notaries digital signings.
For an e notariztion to take place, the order must be created an the document needs to be digitally scanned and uploaded to the platform that the notary uses. Then the appointment can be set to meet with the client. At the appointment the signer must appear before the notary via live video chat, and they must be able to show valid identification. Most platforms require the signers ID be digitally sent to the notary before the signing for the first step in verifying the signer’s identity. The notary will then meet the client through a video conference software, such as zoom, and verify the signers identity agenst the ID that has been presented. Next, the notary must take an oath or affirmation from the signer affirming that they understand the document they’re signing. After the signer has digitally signed the documents the notary then will ectronically sign and stamp the document. The signer is sent the digital file with the digital notarization.
